Historical Bulletin
The Redemptorist Historical Bulletin is the result of a project begun in
summer of 1986. It was then that Father General, Juan Manuel Lasso de la
Vega y Miranda, convoked a forum of Redemptorist Historians. When the forum
assembled in Rome in March of 1987 he challenged the historians present to
work together in planning the preparation of a history of the Congregation.
He offered them, in the following words, his understanding of the purpose of
the project.
|
"We do
not wish to repeat the past in the present, but we want to know the deeds of
the past and what motivated them, in order to discover our own way of being
and acting in the world... remaining always faithful to that which is
lasting, and to the the development of creativity, itself essential to
fidelity." |
Primary Objectives of
the Bulletin
-
To present an accurately
informative account of the impact Redemptorists have had on the people of
North America. Particularly to portray the impact Redemptorists,
individually and as a Religious community of an apostolic life, have had on
popular piety and on popular commitment to religion and to the Catholic
Church
-
To present an objectively
verified picture of the impact the American experience has had on the
religious regime and missionary enterprise of Redemptorists, both within and
beyond North America.
-
To initiate discussion on the
relevance of aspects of the North American experience and tradition of the
Redemptorists a) to the continued vitality of their heritage, and b) to an
effective response to pastoral challenges faced by the Catholic Church
-
To raise conscious awareness
of the active presence of God's grace in the history of the Redemptorist
apostolate in North America, in order to sensitize Redemptorists to the
signs of the continuing presence of God's Grace to those called in these
times to collaborate in God's mission.
