Fr. Eugene O’Reilly, affectionately known as “Red”, was born in Monoghan, Ireland in 1944 and came to Canada with his family. He then graduated with a B.A. from the University of Windsor and pursued theological studies in France and Montreal. He was ordained a priest of the Toronto-Edmonton Province of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.Ss.R.) in 1972. He has served as pastor of a large parish in St. John’s Newfoundland, been Vocations Director for the Redemptorists, and preached many missions and retreats to parishes, teachers and School Boards, Clergy and Religious throughout North America.

Pursuing one of he particular interests, Fr. O’Reilly has contributed prolifically to the world of Liturgical Music. Joining a rich tradition of contribution to church music by the Redemptorists, Father Eugene is one of those who have brought their musical tradition into the contemporary idiom.

Fr. Eugene’s music was developed mainly in support of his parish mission preaching work. Some of his pieces, such as The Prodigal Son, Children of the Light and Woman of Mystery are well-known and well-loved across the country and around the world. He is known for his teaching on joy and compassion, his touching stories and his humour.
