The Church
...And Today
Today,
modern Redemptorists continue where Alphonsus left off. The
Church is a place where all people have a chance to be with
God in a very special way. In Canada Redemptorists care for
parishes from coast to coast instilling in parishioners the
love of God for each and every person. When people can't
come to Church the Redemptorists bring Church to the people.
Just like the first Redemptorists our missionaries still
travel throughout the year to rural parishes giving missions
and preaching the Gospel anew, wherever they go.
For St. Alphonsus the energy and
the inspiration to do all this work did not come from within
himself but from his communion with Christ and his
dedication to Mary, the Mother of God. Today Redemptorists
foster devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary
especially under the title of "Our Mother of Perpetual
Help".
Yesterday...
The Church of St. Alphonsus' day was quite different then it is today. Today
we are experiencing a shortage of priests to meet the needs of the faithful, but
this was not the case for the city of Naples in the 18th century. The Church
into which St. Alphonsus was ordained was crowded with priests who enjoyed a
very comfortable lifestyle with few demands.
In the countryside, however, it was a different story. Many baptized shepherds
and farmers were left on their own with no spiritual care whatsoever. St.
Alphonsus discovered this situation while on retreat in the hills surrounding
Naples and it was to these poor abandoned people that he would dedicate the
mission of his new congregation. It was going to be a different kind of Church.
